Discover Your Strengths,
Change the World!

Mission Statement

The mission of the Key Learning Community is to research and develop innovative practices in teaching to celebrate diversity in our population and our communities and to personalize education by building upon each student's strengths in the following intellectual areas: Linguistic, Musical, Logical-Mathematical, Spatial, Bodily-Kinesthetic, Naturalistic, Interpersonal and Intrapersonal.(Gardner, 1983)

The combination of community and active parental participation with teacher and student exploration of interdisciplinary themes produces enriched learning experiences for the entire Key Learning Community. We are preparing students for service and leadership in a complex democratic society. Concentrating on the individual student evolves into a focus on community with increasing participation through service, mentors and apprenticeships. (Boyer,1982/1995)

On Saturday, January 28th, several of our Key students participated in the annual Indiana Solo and Ensemble Festival at the Ben Davis 9th Grade Center.  We had 10 students and 3 ensembles that performed.   The ratings are based upon a standardized rubric, and a score is given along with comments for improvement. Senior Fundraising Events

Our Key Seniors are in the full swing with yearly fund raising for their annual service trip, traveling this year to Costa Rica.  Students will depart for their trip on March 23rd and return on April 1st.  Listed below are some ways that you can help our seniors reach their financial goal to take advantage of this amazing opportunity.

  • FLOWER SALES: Seniors are currently taking orders for red and pink carnations that be sent to a friend or loved one on Valentine's Day. Cost is $1 and comes with a message.

  • SOUPER BOWL DAY OF CARING: The Key Seniors will lead our canned and dried food drive for this annual even to donate to our partners at Gleaners and Wheeler Mission. Everyone in the community can bring in one or two (or more) canned food items or pasta/noodles, dried bean, rice or cereal. Nothing perishable, please. These items will be taken to our food banks on February 3rd.

  • SWAG SALE -The seniors are continuing with our annual sweatshirt (hoodies or crewnecks), sweat pant, short and long-sleeved T-shirt sale with the Key Logo and optional name and class on the back. We will use these funds for our Service Learning Trip to Costa Rica. Please show your school spirit, stay warm or just be stylish in one of our Key accessories.

  • HOW YOU CAN HELP:  Besides taking advantage of all the previously listed opportunites, we can use your help with silent auction items.  If you know service people, stores, etc. that would be willing to donate something, we have letters explaining the service trip at Key.  Just ask any senior.  In addition, we are making children's dresses as well as some boys' shirts. Anyone who likes to sew and would like to participate in this, please contact 226-4992. amd we will put you in touch with the right people.  Last, we will need school supplies (pens, paper, crayons, markers, pencils, coloring books, notebooks, etc.) to take to the school we will be visiting. They have very little. We also hope to take some used sports equipment, such as soccer shoes, shin guards, or soccer balls. And, of course, we will accept cash to purchase additional donated items  when we arrive.

Our Key Learning Community Senior Class of 2012 were featured in the Indianapolis Star in the Sunday, December 4th edition.  Matthew Tully spent some time with our senior class learning about their upcoming service trip to Costa Rica.  The article is a wonderful insight into our Seniors hopes, fear, and dreams for this service trip, and is a wonderful opportunity to inform our Indianapolis community how they can financially support our Seniors in order to achieve their goal of $22,000 to make this trip.  They have currently raised $5,000 and hope that the feature article will raise awareness of what this trip means to our students and The Key Learning Community.  Read the article here:  Indianapolis Star Feature Article on KLC Seniors

Senior Hermosillo attends Kelley School of Business Institute

One of our current seniors recently took advantage of a once in a lifetime opportunity during summer break. He became an alumnus of the Junior Executive Institute program at the Kelley School of Business at IU Bloomington. Emmanuel Hermosillo (Manny) believes that his opportunity of getting closer to the business world was being a member of the Junior Executive Institute. Here is what Manny thinks about this great program:

“As I was sitting at home switching channels on the TV, I started to think that this was going to be what I was going to do during my summer break. I knew that my summer break would be really boring if I didn’t find something to do. I told my advisory teacher how I felt about my summer break and she gave me this awesome idea to look into. She told me about the Junior Executive Institute Program (JEI) at the Kelley School of Business at IU Bloomington. JEI was what made my summer break a once in a life time experience. This program helped me get more involved in the business industry and let me get a step closer to IU Bloomington. JEI is a program that teaches you in a really fun way about the business world. You take classes that IU students take at the Kelley School of Business, and meet people who are interested in business.  You also become more familiar with the wide variety of people who are involved in business in Indiana.  If you are a high school junior, and you are interested in the business world, I really encourage you to apply for this awesome opportunity that will be offered to you only once. This is the one opportunity that you will not want to miss. I am really grateful that I was part of the JEI program this past session. I thank the Kelley School of Business and their staff for giving me this opportunity that I will never forget. If you need any more information about the program, please stop me in the halls and let me know. I’ll be more than happy to help you get a step closer to the business world. Please visit a quick website I created about more information related to the Junior Executive Institute at:  http://www.wix.com/emmanuelhermosillo/jei

Students Show Off Talents and Fashion

Students at Key Learning Community presented a wonderful evening of fashion and talent on March 10th.  The talent show was a representation of Zyanna Brown's commonality project for Shared Producing and Consuming. She did an amazing job of arranging and putting on a wonderful talent show with assistance from Ms. Stohler and Mrs. Motz.  Not only did we have a display of great talent, but our seniors put on a very classy fashion show.  Proceeds will be applied toward the Senior trip to the Dominican Republic as well as additional funding for our weekly Community Learning Opportunities.  Great job KLC students!

ENCANTADOS!

On Sunday, March 13th, our Seniors put on our annual Encantados dinner and silent auction at the Marian Building on Massachusetts avenue.  This dinner was a celebration of the Dominican Republic and was used to raise funds for the cost of their service trip there this spring.  Dinner included Chicharrones de Polo and Carribean Rice with Grilled Vegetable En Croute.  This was followed by a delicious Chocolate Banana Trifle.  Thanks to all who attended and for your continued support of the Senior Class as they embark on a life changing trip!  Gracias!

Pennies for Patients Huge Success!

Key Learning Community has recently completed their annual Pennies for Patients campaign.  This year, 15 fifth and sixth grade students served as Pennies for Patients Ambassadors.  Their responsibilities included helping with the Kick Off program, working with a specific elementary color group to set their fundraising goal, collect their money daily and counting the daily collections.  Our school wide lofty goal was to collect $1000.00  The Pennies for Patients campaign recognizes those groups who reached their goals:  Indigo, Yellow, Blue, Green, Magenta, Silver, Bronze, Fuchsia, Gold, Lime, Purple and Turquoise groups.  In addition, Gold group collected $115.06.  These groups will be recognized with a pennant to display in their classrooms.  Our final total for Pennies for Patients campaign was $1,355.73 which surpassed our school wide goal.  Those monies will be used by the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society to assist families, fund research, and continue their mission to cure leukemia, lymphoma, Hodgkin's disease and myeloma, and improve the quality of life of patients and their families.  A HUGE HOORAY for KLC!

Winter Culminating Event

Our annual Winter Culminating Event was held on December 15th and was a wonderful representation of the Elementary students work during the Cultures theme and the Secondary students work during the shared commonality of Membership in Groups.  This annual event allows our entire learning community to share the many things we have learned so far.  On this day we had presentations of cultural foods, African myths, A Day of Shawnee Life, a Poetry Slam, and we learned the Haka Dance from New Zealand!  In addition, there were weather explorations, business projects, sketchup workshops and a talking wax museum.  Join us in the spring for our annual Key Chautauqua where our students will once again showcase their work for our themes and commonalities of Explorations and Producing and Consuming

KLC Students Help with Habitat for Humanity

On August 27th, seventeen Key Learning Community students assisted Habitat for Humanity in the building of two homes in the Indianapolis area.  The students worked closely with other builders and they were very pleased with the seniors' work ethic.  Students used power equipment and did alot of the heavy work that is usually only done by the builders themselves due to the maturity level of our Key seniors.  It was an awesome experience for our seniors and IPS and Key Learning Community are proud of the service our students are providing our community.

Everything is Pasta-ble!

Key Students are excited about the pasta they've collected for Second Helpings

When Second Helpings (http://www.secondhelpings.org/), an Indianapolis food bank and community kitchen put out the word that they had run dangerously low on pasta Mr. Davis' Purple Group (5th and 6th grade) heard a call for action.  The group held a class meeting and decided that they could network with families and the school community to raise at least 100 lbs. of pasta.  The pasta drive, dubbed "Everything is Pasta-ble" kicked off on a Friday afternoon with announcements, flyers and posters featuring  a new mascot, "Pasta Dude".  Boxes and boxes of pasta arrived and it was apparent by the following Tuesday that they would meet their goal the next day.  In the end the students collected and logged over 167 lbs of pasta, enough to prepare 1,336 servings and to supply Second Helpings for a day and a half.  Students plan to hold similar pasta drives 3 or 4 times throughout the year.

Extreme Dream Project

The Key Learning Community has partnered with the downtown Hilton Indianapolis in their efforts to clean and rebuild homes for families in need.  The Hilton, along with several other hotels in the Indianapolis area worked collaboratively with six familes with the remodeling of the child's bedroom, light landscaping, and deep cleaning of the home.  Eighteen KLC students assisted the Hyatt and Omni with outside clean up and landscaping on August 20th.  The Key Learning Community understands the importance of service and gives back to their community.
This is the second year that Key has been honored as the leading school in the country for their service in the community and abroad.  Their desire is to help others and to live their lives by their motto:  Discover Your Strengths-Change the World!  This is Key's fourth year participating in the Extreme Dream Project.
